How does music relieve stress at work
Music while you work? Why not?! If doctors can operate while listening to their favorite songs (and not just in movies!) and claim they can focus better that way, we can try too!
Music has been shown to be a very effective anti-anxiety therapy, and studies proving this are not few. Used therapeutically, music reduces stress, alleviates panic attacks and can induce calmness and relaxation. On a physiological level, quality music therapy slows the pulse and heart rate, lowers blood pressure and reduces the level of stress hormones. It seems like just what we need on a stressful day at the office!
Of course, everyone is free to listen to what they like, because you know best what genre excites you, energizes you, calms you down or sends you to the comfort zone. It is important to listen to a genre of music that makes us feel good, otherwise music can increase stress and agitation.
Songs that change your mood for the better
A series of researches have established which type of music has beneficial effects on mood. For example, the sounds of nature are used for emotional and mental relaxation. But the trickling of water or raindrops are also particularly soothing for certain people!
Studies also show that religious and classical music work wonders when you are depressed or tired.
Concert No. 5 by Beethoven and the Parsifal Overture by Wagner are just two recommendations for agitated people who want a calming effect on the nervous system. You can listen to Chopin’s Nocturne, Debussy’s Clair de Lune, Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, Mozzart’s A Little Serenade, Wagner’s Pilgrim’s Chorus or Pathetique by Tchaikovsky.
On the other hand, an eight-minute song composed by a team of researchers and the UK band Marconi Union, called "Weightless", is considered the "most relaxing" piece of music, having effects in significantly reducing anxiety.
Be careful, however, what kind of music you listen to at the office, because certain rhythms can make you more tired! Researchers at McGill University in Montreal have experimentally demonstrated that listening to a pleasant song stimulates the secretion of pleasure hormones, such as dopamine, which greatly influences mood. Thus, some people can increase their energy level on a difficult day with the help of music, while others can use this art to free themselves from negative emotions.
